We've had a really busy week! We had class photos on Tuesday, The Manaiakalani Film Festival at Sylvia Park on Wednesday and practical parenting ideas with Pio Terei on Thursday evening.
Be sure to watch our tamarikis movies online as just a small selection was shown at Sylvia Park. They are fabulous!
Yesterday we were lucky enough to be visited by Applied Theatre Consultants.
Everyday Theatre is an interactive programme that runs in Year 7 & 8 classes, creating a safe forum for young people to talk about family relationships through a facilitated applied theatre workshop. Since it began in 2004 the programme has worked with over 70,000 participants.
In Everyday Theatre, the audience becomes participants who work to unravel the issues of a fictitious dysfunctional family via theatre techniques framed within the safety of a video game structure.
Generally, one to two classes gather in a shared space to view a 15-minute performance. The performance tells a fictional story of a family experiencing abuse, in the format of a video game. A games master invites the students to help get through the four levels of the game. At this point, the classes go back to their home rooms and each class is led through the drama process in the video game by one or two of the teacher/actors.
At different times, the game requires the students to consider the perspectives of the victims and perpetrators of abuse, of witnesses and of bystanders. This is achieved through a range of dramatic conventions carefully stepped to reinforce understandings and to allow the participants to grow confidence in their ability to tell and analyse the story.
At each stage, participants are reminded that they are playing a video game. This is done by achieving part of a password towards the next level in the game. When they have the full password, ‘Every child has hopes and dreams’ they become games masters themselves.
The unique and engaging format has seen Everyday Theatre invited to showcase at many international conferences on applied theatre and community arts, including in the England, Eire, Australia and Singapore.
This week we've been very fortunate to have Dr Thierry from The University of Auckland to lead our Genomics programme. Dr Thierry showed us how to view slides under the microscopes. Students made great observations and then clearly illustrated and labelled what they viewed.
Malo e lelei Whanau! What a fantastic end to a fabulous week! We've had Tasty lūpulu, chop suey and otai yesterday and graceful Tongan dancing by the girls today! We've really been spoilt this week!
Here's a video showing how to make your own otai. With summer around the corner, we'll have an abundance of fruit available.
Reminders for next week:
Just a reminder that this Wednesday 16 September, we are having a Wacky / Weird / Wig Wednesday! Your children are encouraged to go all out along with the staff and come to school in mufti sporting their choice of hairstyle. All this is to raise funds for the Cancer Society; so we'll be having a sausage sizzle and iceblocks combo ($3) on sale. Extra sausages/iceblocks can be ordered separately. Unfortunately, with current alert levels we cannot invite parents onsite.
Next week is Te Wiki o te Reo Māori. Watch this space for updates!
It seems a little like deja vu, but we've just come out of another lockdown! Thank you to whanau who have sent their tamariki back to school. We are doing the best we can to keep tamariki safe. We have stringent cleaning and sanitising routines and while it is not mandatory for students to wear masks, they can do so if they wish. If you have any questions please feel free to email me. If you wish to come into school, that's fine just remember to download the 'NZ Tracer App' so that you can scan in.
The Prime Minister has announced that alert level 3 will continue for the next 12 days, ending on Wednesday the 26th of August 2020. This means that school is closed for all students except where the family indicates that they are an essential worker. Please expect a call from your child's teacher over the next 24 hours.
To assist learning at home the following preparation has been made:
learner's in ROOMS 6-11 can collect a device from school on Monday morning the 17th of August between 9:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. Thereafter the school once again be locked down as many teachers live with all the family members will fall into the vulnerable category. Students should be instructed to participate in online learning with the teachers at the scheduled times each day. Logging into the class site will provide access to additional learning material.
Learners in rooms 2-4 can collect school printed resources designed to consolidate current learning.
Please use the contact address found on the school website to communicate with any staff member if needed. If you need support in any way, please make contact.
This lockdown feels very different from the first, please exercise lots of patience with your children and note that all support agencies are there to assist if you start feeling challenged.
Year 7's have had a busy week with learning all about bike safety. The students had lessons on Monday and Wednesday. They learnt lots of exciting new skills and most importantly- how to stay safe while cycling on the road.
Thank you for getting the children back to school. We now have 85% attending - just 6% below our goal. Those who are here, are looking forward to their classmates returning as there is a pizza lunch on offer for the first class to have all their students back at the same time.
As we mentioned before, no written mid-year school reports will be issued. Instead the staff are putting aside two afternoons and evenings to meet with all the families.
We have grouped the families to attend on either the Wednesday 1 July or Thursday 2 July.
It would be really helpful if all families could help each other complete the interview registration on the Skool Loop app.
Next week we will be starting testing. Please ensure your child is at school every day or contact the office (via telephone or Skool Loop) to let us know that they will be away.
If your child is currently in year 8 then you should be considering where they will be going to high school next year. If your child will be going to Tamaki College, then enrolment forms are available at school. Your child can return the form to school and we will forward it on to Tamaki College. If you are considering an out-of-zone enrolment, be sure to take note of the closing date.
It's good to see a steady increase in our class roll. Students are getting used to the idea of sanitising each time they enter our learning space.
Last Friday Mr Naidoo made yummy chicken curry for all students and staff.
Welcome to the new normal of social-distancing and regular hand sanitising! It was great seeing so many smiling faces at the beginning of the week.
For those families who haven't yet returned to school, the class blog can still be accessed for learning but there won't be any virtual lessons.
